The Manual UV Inspection Station (MUVIS) is a stand-alone visible and UV microscope that provides a quick way to scan your plates for protein crystals. Place your plate on the plate holder, navigate to the drop of interest using the MUVIS control software, and immediately see if your crystal is a protein.
MUVIS uses a UV-sensitive, black-and-white 1.4 MP CCD camera with a short exposure time that detects tryptophan illuminated under UV light. This technology allows you to quickly distinguish between protein and salt crystals. The Overlay function superimposes the UV image on top of the visible light image to help pinpoint which crystals are protein.
MUVIS is designed to be extremely user-friendly. Controls on the sides of the system allow you to quickly and easily switch between UV and visible light, adjust camera settings, and capture images to save to your computer. All of these controls may be adjusted in the software as well, providing you more flexibility in using the system. The MUVIS also has motorized focal controls to easily get your drops in focus.
MUVIS is the size of a coffee maker (about 11 in. x 11 in.) and will fit in nearly any desktop setup. Weighing only 12 lb, the entire system is light enough to be moved around the lab. It can also be used safely in a cold room.
The MUVIS control software provides a convenient way to view plate contents and search for protein crystals. You can use it to view images side-by-side, superimpose a UV image onto a visible image, adjust camera settings, and more.
There are two major panes in the software, the Visible Image pane and Ultraviolet Image pane. The Visible Image pane is on the left side of the software, and is active when you start the software. To investigate a drop with ultraviolet light, , click the Capture with UV button on the bottom left of the software and the image will appear on the right side of the MUVIS software in the Ultraviolet Image pane.

A very good and simple to use product for following up questionable drops. Two small complaints -there was some issue with the USB link/drive such that it often needed to be unplugged and plugged back in after long periods of being off. Sometimes the plate profiles didn't work properly. Occasionally the drive motor seemed to get stuck at the topmost position and wouldn't move to plate presets unless it was first moved manually. On the whole, very good and easy to use apart from those minor points.
