Powerful Experiment Design

  • Create “layers” that assign conditions to a single well or over several plates.
  • Vary conditions randomly with a Random Layer or systematically with a Grid Layer.
  • Work with one plate per experiment, or design an experiment with multiple plates.
  • Rock Maker is pre-loaded with the most commonly used commercially-available screens, and lets you design your own.
  • NEW! Use the Screen Experiment Wizard to simultaneously screen a protein against multiple screens – Rock Maker builds the individual experiments for you.

Two vies of the same drop containing Lysozyme crystals, one using visible light and one utilizing SONICC (Second Order Non-linear Imaging of Chiral Crystals).

Dynamic and Efficient Image Viewing

  • Visually inspect an entire plate at once with Rock Maker's thumbnail view. Toggle between imaging modes with a few mouse clicks.
  • Navigate and score your images using your keyboard and customizable scoring schemas.
  • View images in a slideshow for presentations or hands-off, full-screen image inspection.
  • Filter out empty drops, or view computer-scored positive and negative hits with Autoscoring (requires UV or SONICC imaging).
  • Zero-in on a Region of Interest in real-time with dynamic zoom using the scroll wheel on your mouse.
  • Annotate, draw on, and measure objects in your images with drawing tools.
  • View up to four drops simultaneously on the Compare tab. Compare different inspections of the same drop, or drops from different experiments.
  • Bring out details in UV, SONICC and FRAP images using the leveling histogram.
  • NEW! The image navigator’s Composite View shows you which drops at which wells have images with specific imaging settings from specific inspections – no more guessing which drops were imaged with UV.

Administer group-based accessibility and quotas to maximize your lab's productivity.

World-Class Support and Continuous User-Driven Improvements

  • Our support team continually receives the highest marks for customer satisfaction. Having trouble? Send an email or call – within an hour someone will work on your issue.
  • With an average of four software releases per year, your feedback and suggestions are developed, tested, and implemented year-round – which means the think-tank behind Rock Maker is a pool of crystallographers working at the leading pharmaceutical companies and research universities.

Organize plates, screens, ingredients, users, projects, experiments and more using the familiar Windows-like interface of the Tree.

Pre-populated Database

  • Rock Maker comes preconfigured with ingredients commonly used in crystallization experiments, and intelligence that allows you to vary the concentration or pH level of any ingredient without needing to input it again.
  • Keep your experiments organized with our efficient folder and file structure, using as many or as few levels as you want.
  • The database tracks more than just proteins. It conveniently bundles the buffers, ligands and other compounds you’re using to crystallize, making it easy to re-use your protein formulations.
  • Common commercially available screens are already entered and defined. Just drag-and-drop to select the one you need for your experiment.
  • Rock Maker's quick search puts nearly every piece of data in the system at your fingertips.

The Formulator can dispense a 100µL, 3 ingredient, 96-well grid in as little as 2 minutes.

Seamless Robot Integration

  • Rock Maker integrates with Rock Imager as well as other Formulatrix products such as the Formulator, Mantis, and NT8 liquid dispensers, so you can design, dispense, image, analyze, and optimize from one place.
  • An API is available for developers to integrate Rock Maker with other robots.

Built-In Data Analysis Tools

  • Use Search and Filter to mine your data to uncover trends based on a variety of parameters, helping you to continue your research efforts and focus in on conditions likely to grow bigger and better crystals. Or use the included Sample Searches to get started.
  • Create and manipulate charts to visualize your experiment results.
  • Print experiment reports for your lab notebooks.

Built-In Training with Rock Maker University

Rock Maker University provides tours of the major features and functions, and also provides tutorials that span the entire crystallography process to help you create what you need to create. For example, when you complete the "Make a Protein" tutorial, your efforts will result in a protein formulation you can use in any experiment -- no time is sacrificed while learning to use the software.

Ajinomoto Althea, Inc. - WILLIAM WITTBOLD 8/5/2015 4:32 PM

"My supervisor is already impressed that our analysts have hit the ground running with the Rock Imager and have been generating data much faster. Our group workload is increasing and we would like to complement our Rock Imager and Formulator with the NT8 so move our crystallization projects along even faster, and also become a showcase lab for you!"

"…we’ve also doubled our throughput in a few short months thanks to Formulatrix!"

IFSC - USP - São Paulo, Brazil – Maria Santos/João Possatto 8/28/2014 8:15 AM

Everything works well. We never had any trouble with both products. We use it for crystallization of proteins.

Leading Academic Lab – anonymous review 8/21/2014 1:38 PM

Crystallization screening is easy to setup with Rock Maker and image quality is very good. Technical support team responded to my request in a timely manner and solved all the problems I had.

GlaxoSmithKline - Liam Bonnette 4/26/2013 3:16 PM

RockMaker software is an evolving piece of software that becomes better with improvements implemented on a recurring basis. The Formulatrix software team is always eager to hear user recommendations and they certainly implement requested features. The software is very powerful and helps me complete crystal "hunting" quickly and efficiently.

Wang Laboratory at The Skirball institute - NYU Langone Medical Center 9/11/2014 7:29 PM

The software is very easy to use. Imaging conditions can easily be customized per experiment.

A leading academic lab – Anonymous Review 8/27/2014 8:01 PM

Fairly intuitive once you understand the program nomenclature. Very powerful way to design both 96 well and 24 well screens. Also very nicely catalogs and keeps track of images of crystals. The program does have a few bugs, though. Fortunately, they resolve when the program is restarted.

Major Pharmaceutical Company – anonymous review 4/30/2013 3:34 PM

In the single-drop report, it seems that only the image of the whole drop could be included. It'll be great if a zoom-in photo focused on one crystal could be used instead.

Major Pharmaceutical Company – anonymous review 10/20/2014 5:15 PM

It does a very good job of tracking experiments, but it's frustrating to use RockMaker, especially as a beginner - everything seems to require very precise, non-intuitive combinations of mousing and keystrokes. I think a lot more organized training would be helpful.
