Application Scientist – Advanced Cell Culture Automation

Company: Formulatrix
Location: Bedford, MA
Travel: Approximately 30%

Join the Future of Cell Culture Automation

Formulatrix is seeking a highly motivated, scientifically driven Application Scientist to help transform the future of cell culture through advanced automation using the Formulatrix Cellmatic.
This is not a traditional applications role. This is an opportunity to work at the forefront of a pivotal shift in the life sciences industry — helping laboratories move from labor-intensive, manual cell culture workflows to intelligent, scalable automation platforms.

Our automated cell culture systems are enabling research and bioprocessing teams to improve consistency, scalability, data quality, and efficiency while reducing the repetitive manual work traditionally associated with cell culture. As an Application Scientist, you will play a critical role in bridging the gap between cutting-edge automation technology and the scientists using it every day.

This role is ideal for someone who is passionate about cell culture science, enjoys working directly with customers, and wants to help shape how automation will redefine laboratory workflows in the years ahead.

Position Overview

The Application Scientist will work closely with customers, sales, and product leads throughout the full lifecycle of highly customized automated cell culture systems — from early workflow discussions and system design through installation validation, training, and ongoing scientific partnership.

A key aspect of this role is deeply understanding customer workflows, challenges, and scientific requirements, then translating those needs into User Requirement Specifications (URS), solution proposals, Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), Site Acceptance Tests (SAT), and workflow recommendations.
This individual will become a trusted scientific advisor to customers while also serving as a critical liaison between end users and product managers.

As our customer base continues to grow, this role will also help build and scale global applications support capabilities by collaborating closely with a scientific applications team in Indonesia. The Application Scientist will help transfer knowledge, develop best practices, and contribute to creating a scalable customer support infrastructure capable of supporting expanding global adoption of automated cell culture systems.

Key Responsibilities

Translate Cell Culture Science into Automation Solutions

  • Work directly with scientists, process development teams, and laboratory leadership to understand complex cell culture workflows and requirements
  • Translate customer workflows and scientific goals into a specific Cellmatic configuration
  • Contribute to the development of:
    • User Requirement Specifications (URS)
    • Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT)
    • Site Acceptance Testing (SAT)
    • Workflow validation and protocol documentation
  • Partner closely with product managers to ensure customer requirements are accurately implemented

Customer-Facing Scientific Leadership

  • Serve as a primary scientific and technical contact for customers throughout the customer journey
  • Guide customers through the adoption of advanced automation technologies and help build confidence in the automated handling of sensitive cell lines and processes
  • Lead customer training, workflow optimization, troubleshooting, and scientific support
  • Build strong long-term relationships with customers and become a trusted advisor in automated cell culture workflows

Pre-Sales Applications & Workflow Development

  • Support product demonstrations and technical discussions with prospective customers
  • Evaluate customer workflows and help define optimal automation configurations
  • Perform workflow analysis, throughput estimations, and process recommendations
  • Support scientific presentations, webinars, trade shows, and customer visits

Implementation & Validation

  • Support and coordinate FAT and SAT activities with customers and internal teams
  • Assist with installation planning, onboarding, and deployment activities
  • Help ensure successful implementation and long-term customer success

Global Applications Collaboration & Scaling

  • Collaborate closely with the scientific applications support team in Indonesia to help scale customer support capabilities as the installed base grows
  • Help develop standardized workflows, troubleshooting processes, and training materials
  • Transfer scientific and workflow knowledge across global teams to ensure a consistent customer experience and support quality
  • Contribute to building a scalable global applications infrastructure for next-generation automation systems

Qualifications

Required

  • B.S or higher in Cell Biology, Bioengineering, Biotechnology, or related scientific discipline
  • Hands-on mammalian or stem cell culture experience
  • Strong scientific communication and presentation skills
  • Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities
  • Ability to work directly with customers in dynamic, fast-paced environments
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally as needed

Preferred

  • Experience with laboratory automation, liquid handling, or integrated instrumentation systems
  • Experience supporting customer-facing scientific or technical applications
  • Familiarity with validation documentation, including URS, FAT, and SAT
  • Experience working with cell therapy, regenerative medicine, or high-throughput laboratory workflows

What Makes This Role Unique

  • Directly influence the future of automated cell culture
  • Work with cutting-edge robotics, software, and laboratory automation technologies
  • Apply your hands-on cell culture expertise to solve real-world scientific and engineering challenges
  • Help customers transition from manual workflows to scalable, reproducible automation
  • Play a key role in building the global applications infrastructure supporting a rapidly growing automation platform
  • Be part of a rapidly growing field with significant opportunities for professional growth and impact
  • Work in a highly visible role with direct influence on product evolution and customer success
