Volumetric Performance Evaluation of the Mantis® Liquid Dispenser using the Artel MVS® Multichannel Verification System

About

This application note evaluates the volumetric performance of the Mantis® liquid dispenser using the Artel MVS® Multichannel Verification System, a dual-dye measurement platform that provides NIST-traceable volume measurements in accordance with ISO 23783-2:2022.

Standard, HiFi, and PFE chips were tested in Low Volume (LV) and High Volume (HV) formats at their minimum diaphragm dispense volumes, with Silicone and PFE Continuous Flow (CF) chips evaluated at a separate target volume. Each chip and volume condition was assessed using 16 replicate wells.

The Challenge: Maintaining Volumetric Accuracy at Low Volumes

Low-volume liquid handling is a core requirement of modern life science workflows, particularly in omics, high-throughput experimentation, and diagnostics. As assays trend toward smaller reaction volumes and higher-density microplate formats, the accuracy and precision of every dispensed volume become increasingly critical for conserving precious samples. Small-volume errors can affect reagent concentration, reaction kinetics, assay sensitivity, and reproducibility across wells, plates, and runs.

Mantis is a single-channel, non-contact liquid dispenser that uses patented microfluidic technology (microdiaphragm pumps and valve clusters called “chips”) to deliver precise volumes starting from 0.1 µL while minimizing dead volume. Chip variants (LV, HV, XL, CF) support different volume ranges, with PFE chips available for organic solvents and harsh solutions.
